On February 13th, 2023, the Cross River State Ministry of Health, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), organized a sensitization walk and an awareness campaign in Calabar to commemorate the International Condom Day. The event was aimed at promoting safe sex practices so as to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and unintended pregnancies, as well as raising consciousness about the importance of using condoms.

The Honourable Commissioner for Health in Cross River State, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, while flagging off the campaign spoke on the importance of the event and the many dangers of unprotected sex, and urged the young people to safeguard their lives by using condoms or abstaining from sexual activities to avoid unintended pregnancies and infections from sexually transmitted diseases. Dr Ekpeyong also applauded UNFPA Nigeria for partnering with the ministry in commemorating this year's event as well as appreciated UNFPA’s unwavering support towards achieving sexual and reproductive health and rights for all.

During the event, over 12,000 condoms were distributed to young people and adults, and an estimated 5,000 persons were reached with the awareness campaign. UNFPA Nigeria's partnership in the 2023 commemoration of the International Condom Day reinforces its commitment to promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights for all, including access to safe and effective contraception, particularly among young people.

In his remarks, the Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health/HIV Analyst for UNFPA Nigeria Cross River Sub-office, Oke Nteigbanam, emphasized the importance of condoms in promoting safe sex practices and reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, and HIV prevention which are critical priorities for UNFPA. He mentioned that condoms provide a highly effective barrier method for protection, making them essential for protection against sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies.

By partnering with civil society organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders, UNFPA Nigeria remains committed to promoting access to condoms and supporting initiatives that raise awareness about the importance of safe sex practices. UNFPA believes that every person has the right to make informed and voluntary choices about their sexual and reproductive lives.

Through its support for events such as the International Condom Day, UNFPA is taking active steps towards achieving its mission to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled.
