My name is Hannatu Buba. I am a 35-year-old resident of Bayan Quarters in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. Recently, my community was devastated by a severe flood that struck in the middle of the night, forcing my family and me to seek refuge at the Gubio Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp.

As a mother of seven children, I have faced significant challenges. Tragically, two of my children passed away, leaving me with five children to care for. The immense responsibility of providing for my family led me to consider family planning, although I was initially hesitant due to the stigma surrounding it in my community.

During our time at the Gubio IDP camp, various organizations conducted sensitization programs. However, it was the visit from UNFPA frontline workers that truly changed my life. They provided the key information on gender-based violence (GBV), sexual and reproductive health (SRH) including the availability of services in the camp. This knowledge empowered me in a way I had never experienced before.

"The UNFPA team highlighted the impact of GBV, the importance of prevention, and the channels to report incidents of GBV confidentially." "They also emphasized antenatal care, the benefits of delivering at healthcare facilities, and the value of child spacing." "The message on child spacing particularly resonated with me, sparking a desire to learn more about how I could better plan for my family's future."

After much thought, I decided to visit a healthcare facility to explore child spacing options. This decision marked a significant turning point in my life. I received counseling and opted for the insertion of an Implanon contraceptive, which provided me with the confidence and peace of mind to care for my children without fear of unplanned pregnancies.

The healthcare professionals also encouraged me to return for follow-up visits to address any concerns. Additionally, the organization provided me with a dignity kit containing essential items for personal hygiene and well-being. They also referred my children to UNICEF for educational support, ensuring they could continue their schooling despite our difficult circumstances.

"I am deeply grateful to UNFPA for their dedication to providing free access to accurate information and sensitive support services, especially for vulnerable populations like internally displaced persons." Their comprehensive sensitization programs have not only improved my life but also demonstrated the transformative power of education and empowerment in rebuilding lives and communities.

Today, I feel empowered to make informed decisions about my reproductive health and to advocate for the well-being of my family. My story is a testament to the profound impact that timely and compassionate interventions can have on individuals facing adversity. Thank you, UNFPA, for giving me hope and a chance to rebuild my life with dignity and purpose.
