The COVID-19 Situation Analysis with data for the week of 9th to 15th May 2020.
The upsurge in cases continued sharply reaching 5,445 and 171 deaths from the 3,912 cases and 117 deaths reported the previous week.
Nigeria ranked 61st out of the 215 affected countries in the world, 6th out of the 54 affected countries in Africa (all African are now affected), and 2nd out of the 23 countries in UNFPA West and Central Africa Region (WCAR).
Nigeria accounted for 18.7% of total cases and 25.2% of total deaths in UNFPA WCAR, 6.8% of the total cases and 6.7% of total deaths in Africa, and 0.1% of the total cases and 0.05% of total deaths in the world.
The widespread community transmission increased from 56% to 64% during the week.
The total tests increased from 23,835 to 32,942, which also explains the upsurge in reported cases. Similarly, the number of POIs increased marginally from 9,237 to 9,490 with 99% successfully followed.
The upsurge in cases can be attributed to the increased capacity for testing, but the testing capacity remained low considering the continued widespread cases of mysterious deaths.
With the Epi-Curve of the top 12 States affected by COVID-19 infection. The 12 states are Lagos, Kano, FCT, Katsina, Bauchi, Borno, Jigawa, Ogun, Gombe, Kaduna, Sokoto and Edo.
