Female genital mutilation

Nigeria, due to its large population, has the highest absolute number of female genital mutilation (FGM) worldwide, accounting for about one-quarter of the estimated 130 million survivors of FGM in the world. Despite legislation and policies prohibiting the practice Female Genital Mutilation is practiced at various scales in many communities and settings in the country. Addressing the challenges of FGM is imperative not only because of its harmful impact on the reproductive and sexual health of girls and women, but also because it violates their fundamental rights and undermines equitable social economic development of the country. With support from several development partners, UNFPA together with UNICEF is working to accelerate the elimination of female genital mutilation and cutting within a generation, by 2030.
