NIGERIA NATIONAL FAMILY PLANNING CONFERENCE 2020

 

Abuja 9th – 11 December 2020. 

The Association for Advancement of Family Planning (AAFP) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health has Organized the 6th Nigeria Family Planning Conference with the theme: “Post Family Planning 2020 Agenda and Safeguarding Investments in Emergencies, Adaptation, Innovation, and Resilience”.

 

In his opening remarks, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire said that investment in family planning saves lives, empowers women and girls, strengthens health systems, and has a profound and lasting impact on national development. He further stated that the outcome of the 2012 London Summit on family planning was the family planning goals to enable 120 million additional women and girls of reproductive age, to have access to contraceptives by the year 2020. He said ‘’at this summit Nigeria committed to achieving a modern contraception prevalence rate of 36% by the year 2018”.

 

 The Minister commended United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Development (DFATD), United State Agency for International Development, Foreign Commonwealth and Development office, and other benefactors of Nigeria’s family planning program who contributed to family planning Basket funding that supports procurement and distribution of family planning commodities since 2017.    

Earlier, the Chairman of the Occasion, the Emir of Shonga, Alhaji Haliru Yahaya disclosed that Family Planning can reduce maternal deaths by at last 25% and also empower women and girls. He urged the citizens to comply with the family panning in their respective communities.

 

In her remarks, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representatives, Ms. Ulla Mueller said that women have the right to decide on how to get children and how many children she desires to have. She added that family planning is a key enabler to achieved Sustained Development Goals. “family Planning enables women and young people to completed their education, it saves governments money, and it helps entire communities and nations to thrive’’. She said.
