KOICA and UNFPA brought together the Borno State Government and partners from the Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development. They were brought together to track progress and reflect on the achievements made in the KOICA-funded project implemented by UNFPA. The partners commended KOICA and UNFPA for the impact in building resilient communities through the restoration of access to basic medical and social services in conflict-affected communities within Borno State.
The project had specific objectives focusing on 3 thematic areas: 1. to increase access to comprehensive maternal and child care;2. Increase access to fistula care and improve capacity for a results-based data management system, and 3. health systems strengthening and empowerment of women and girls. The latter has been achieved through knowledge transfer and skills acquisition programs that have built and expanded the resilience of community members within the humanitarian context.
The implementation of the project has been largely uninterrupted, despite the protracted armed conflict and humanitarian crisis, and the global COVID-19 pandemic. One of the key reasons for this is that the approach has been locally-driven and aligned with the Borno State Development Plan. This has ensured that interventions, activities, and services have reached further and reached a higher number of women and girls.
