A comprehensive
survey of health facilities in 12 randomly selected states of Nigeria,
with two states from each of
Nigeria’s 6 geo-political zones, was undertaken as part of maternal
mortality reduction efforts in Nigeria.
The aim of the study was to determine the availability and quality
of essential obstetric care (EOC) facilities in Nigeria as a measure
of progress towards maternal mortality reduction and to provide relevant
baseline for formulation and evaluation of future programme and policy
actions.
The specific objectives of the study were as follows: to
determine the availability of EOC services in Nigeria; to ascertain the
geographical spread of EOC facilities; to assess the pattern of
utilization of EOC services; to determine the quality of existing EOC
services; and, to provide recommendations on policy and programme
directions
for the reduction of maternal mortality in Nigeria.
The 12 states selected for the study
were: Abia, Borno, Cross
River, Edo, Imo, Katsina, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Sokoto,
and Taraba.
