National Study on Essential Obstetric Care (EOC) Facilities in Nigeria

A comprehensive survey of health facilities in 12 randomly selected states of Nigeria, with two states from each of Nigeria’s 6 geo-political zones, was undertaken as part of maternal mortality reduction efforts in Nigeria.  The aim of the study was to determine the availability and quality of essential obstetric care (EOC) facilities in Nigeria as a measure of progress towards maternal mortality reduction and to provide relevant baseline for formulation and evaluation of future programme and policy actions.

The specific objectives of the study were as follows: to determine the availability of EOC services in Nigeria; to ascertain the geographical spread of EOC facilities; to assess the pattern of utilization of EOC services; to determine the quality of existing EOC services; and, to provide recommendations on policy and programme directions
for the reduction of maternal mortality in Nigeria.  The 12 states selected for the study
were: Abia, Borno, Cross River, Edo, Imo, Katsina, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Sokoto,
and Taraba.
